4 Myths About Dental Implants

Dental implants are the best tooth replacement technology available. Anchored in the jaw like a natural tooth, a dental implant provides equivalent functionality and a realistic appearance. Dental implants are a lasting replacement solution for any number of teeth from one to a full mouth restoration.

Yet even with all these benefits, some patients are still unsure about getting dental implants because of the myths they’ve heard. Here are 4 myths about dental implants debunked.

Myth #1: The Dental Implant Procedure is Painful.

People with dental anxiety or those that fear dental procedures tend to assume the worst. But in most cases dental implants can be placed with local anesthesia to numb the area and prevent you from feeling any pain during placement. If you would prefer, additional sedation options are available to help you feel more relaxed or even completely unaware during the procedure.

If you experience any discomfort following your procedure, over the counter pain medication should be sufficient. Anti-inflammatory pain relievers are often the most effective in recovery to reduce inflammation.

Myth #2: Dental Implants Don’t Last.

Only a very small percentage of dental implants fail. If they do, it is typically due to failure to follow instructions from the dentist for follow up care. For a dental implant to heal properly it is necessary to keep your teeth and mouth clean and healthy. It is best to avoid smoking, as it can restrict blood flow to the area and slow or prevent healing.

With accurate placement, the success rate for dental implants is 98%. Once the implant has fused with the jaw bone, that bond can last for the rest of your life.

Myth #3: Dental Implants Are Expensive.

“Expensive” is a relative term that doesn’t mean the same thing for everyone. Depending on your financial status, you may or may not consider dental implants to be expensive. But what is more important to consider is whether or not this is the best option for your dental health.

Dental implants provide a fully functional, natural looking tooth replacement option that can last a lifetime. It is a worthwhile investment. If you find that the cost is too much for your budget, there are financing options to make it more affordable by dividing the cost into low monthly payments, often with little or no interest.

Myth #4: Only Certain Patients Can Get Dental Implants.

It is true that not everyone is an ideal candidate for dental implants immediately upon the first consultation and evaluation. Some patients who have had missing teeth for a long time may have experienced some bone loss in the jaw, making the bone unfit to support an implant.

However, this does not mean that you can never get a dental implant. There is a procedure called bone grafting that can prepare the jaw bone for a dental implant. A bone fragment is placed under the gum tissue on top of the existing bone to thicken it and encourage regeneration of the bone tissue. A few months later, once the bone has had time to grow, you may be ready for a dental implant.
